Thousands of workers lose jobs due to pandemic - DOLE

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, April 28 (PIA) -- Thousands of workers in the private sector have lost their jobs as an effect of the implementation of stiffer measures to combat the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Based on the report of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 2, there were 14 establishments that were permanently closed affecting 63 workers, while 60 establishments have implemented retrenchments affecting 440 workers. 

Chester Trinidad, DOLE information officer, also said that there were 674 establishments that are temporarily closed, affecting 10,665 workers, while there are 280 establishments that are implementing flexible work arrangements with 6,000 workers affected. 

Regional Director for DOLE Joel M. Gonzales said that the severity of COVID-19's impact in the business sector is very evident, hence the need for the government, especially the LGUs, to balance the implementation of guidelines and protocols between public health and the economy. 

To help those who are severely effected, Gonzales said they have been providing assistance under the COVID-19 Adjustment Measure Program (CAMP), as well as aid to those qualified for the Tulong Panghanapbuhay para sa Displaced/ Disadvantaged (TUPAD) programs. 

Atty. Jayson Elizaga, supervising labor Eemployment officer, also said that the number of establishments that are closing is increasing because of financial loses especially in the manufacturing industries. (JCK/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
