Kalinga health workers intensify immunization info drive

CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga, Oct. 29 (PIA) - - Health workers from the Provincial Health Office and the rural health units in the province are intensifying their information campaign about the Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR SIA) in efforts to achieve higher percentage coverage.

Remegio Basilan of the provincial DOH office (PDOHO) said their personnel and their local counterpart were mobilized to conduct info drive on MR SIA for a 100 percent coverage among children six to 59 months old until the end of this month. However, he admitted that as of October 19, they have recorded low performance of only 19.62% as some parents are hesitant to submit their children for immunization due to Dengvaxia “scare|.

“People always associate it (MR SIA) to Dengvaxia,” he lamented citing a monitoring report they conducted in Pinukpuk.

“Parents are still hesitant to allow their children to get vaccinated because of the negative issues the Dengvaxia brought. Even this immunization was administered three year ago with no negative effects, still parents don’t sign the waiver or give their consent”, he added.

In the conduct of simultaneous information campaign to explain that MR SIA is different from Dengvaxia, the RHU doctors are enjoined to take part to redeem the thrust of people.

“We are hopeful this will help. This was also the reason why we did not send a health contingent to the provincial athletic meet since we need our Human Resource for Health (field health workers) to attend to this problem,” he said. By Peter A. Balocnit (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
