Dr. Miriam Tiongan, head of the Provincial Veterinary Office, said the model raisers will serve as showcase of good practices on animal raising for livelihood to promote competitiveness in quality production and safe animal caring. The awardees are into organic practice and good animal husbandry practice, she said.
Geraldo A. Meana of Taloy Sur, Tuba who is engaged in swine and poultry raising was adjudged the winner who will represent the province at the regional level. He received P8,000.00 cash award.
Meana fabricated machines such as feeds mixer and milling machine for corn, soy bean, oyster shell which he uses in his farm. He plants corn which he uses as feeds.
Elpedia M. Alos of Naguey, Atok placed second place and received a cash prize amounting to P7, 000.00. She used a combination of fermented leaves and vegetables as feeds. A remarkable good practice in her farm is the absence of foul odor of animal poop.
Consolation winners with P850.00 cash prize were Fortunato A. Belino of Taba-ao, Kapangan who is into swine raising and Jan Irvin D. Kis-ing of Colalo, Mankayan who raises swine, chicken and cattle.
Aside from cash prizes, the winners were also awarded trophy and certificates.
Outstanding raisers are granted incentives to engage in integrated farming system for increased food production which is sustainable and contributes to food security.
Part of the congress was a series of lectures on behavioral attitude on safe production for human consumption, dairy farming and production, carabao production, insurance coverage under the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, and farm tourism among others. (JDP/SCA-PIA-CAR, Benguet)
