More than 200 delegates composed of para-athletes from the different municipalities of Benguet and the city of Baguio and other reps from the PSC, local government units and the partner agencies kicked off the provincial event with a motorcade from the Kilometer 3 area to the Benguet Sports Complex in Wangal for the opening program.
In his welcome remarks, La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda thanked the PSC for bringing the para games event in the province of Benguet particularly in the municipality of La Trinidad which is a big encouragement for the differently-abled persons particularly the para athletes here.
He also praised the para athletes from the participating municipalities of Benguet and the city of Baguio for taking time and joining the provincial event which aims to discover new breed of talents to compete in the national and international level with the differently abled youth.
He stressed that the differently-abled persons should inspire the local government officials to come up with programs and project that would prioritize their needs and benefits.
PSC Spokesperson Jan Facundo said that the sporting event is the successor and the improved version of the Differently-Abled Sports for Life (DAS4Life) program from last year.
“From last year’s DAS4Life program, this year’s Pilipinas Para Games will now have a country-wide scope that will reach more talents and promising para-athletes across the country,” Facundo said.
“Layunin ng 2019 PIlipinas Para Games na mahikayat ang mga kabataan ng PWD Community na paunlarin ang kanilang kakayahan sa isports. Hangad din ng Komisyon na maging daan ang palarong ito sa pagdiskubre ng mga natatanging atleta na maaaring isabak sa mga palaro sa labas ng bansa,” he added.
Among the sporting events to be played until May 11 include bocce, chess, athletics, archery and exhibition events of the power lifting and basketball on wheelchair. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
