Creation of BLISTTDA gets Senate support

BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 8 (PIA) --The establishment of Baguio City, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and Tublay Development Authority (BLISTTDA) is nearing realization with strong backing from both Houses of Congress.

Baguio City Congressman Mark Go’s House Bill Number 6974 was already passed in the House of Representatives, and now Senate Bill No. 1692 proposed by Senator Ralph Recto is getting a push from the Senate Committee on Government Corporations and Public Enterprises chaired by Senator Richard Gordon.

Gordon, joined by Senate President Vicente Sotto III, presided a public hearing for Senate Bill  1692  at the CAP Cultural and Trade Center  here last January 4, with the goal of passing  said  bill  before Congress goes into recess by February.

Go, Benguet Congressman Ronald Cosalan, Benguet Governor Crescencio Pacalso, Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan, La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda, Sablan Mayor Arthur Baldo, Tuba Mayor Ignacio Rivera, and Tublay Mayor Armando Lauro attended the public hearing.

Key stakeholders representing regional line agencies, academic institutions, private sectors and non – government organizations also participated in the said hearing.

Gordon affirmed his support to the creation of the BLISSTDA as it is set to address Baguio’s over population and (over) development concerns, and at the same time, will open or spread development opportunities to the nearby Benguet towns and eventually to the rest of Cordillera.

The bill aims   is to ensure better quality of life and more vibrant communities in terms of living, learning and business environment, as well as investment and job opportunities, he added.

Gordon expressed his satisfaction on the public hearing’s turnout, which he assured will be taken into consideration in re – drafting the Senate’s version of the proposed law.

With the support of the Senate president, their committee will sponsor the bill and when passed, they will push for a bicameral committee conference with the House of Representatives, with the end goal of enacting a law that will create the BLISTTDA before Congress goes on recess in February 12, Gordon said.
