OWWA sustains support for families of OFWs

BANGUED, Abra, July 30(PIA) -- Not all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are highly paid and financially well-off, hence the need for augmentative support from government to fully develop the capacities of their families for survival.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), which is mandated to look after the general welfare and protection of the OFWs including their family members as well as those of ex-OFWs, has instituted some support programs such as scholarships to family members of OFWs.

Fredlyn Beato, OFW Center Coordinator of the Provincial Government of Abra, said Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and the   Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMW) are offered to children of OFWs.  Siblings of single or unmarried OFWs are also eligible to avail of the scholarship grant.

Courses or educational programs offered under the EDSP are those that are considered priority courses by the Department of Science and Technology .On the other hand, applicants to the CMW scholarship program have to conform to the OWWA on the course choice of the scholar-applicant.

Meanwhile, OWWA continues to provide other support services to OFWs as well as ex-OFWs such are insurance claims for deceased OFW who is an active member before his death. There is also medical assistance though the guideline is still under review.

The livelihood assistance dubbed as the “Balik Pinas, Balik Hanapbuhay” for the OFWs who have been repatriated due to illness or because of displacement due to war, or due to misfortune such as maltreatment by his/her employer is also continuing. (PIA Abra)
