Abreñean corn producers learn to prevent product contamination

BANGUED, Abra, July 27(PIA) -- Corn ranks next to rice as the Filipino staple food crop in the Philippines but it is one of the grain crops susceptible to fungal infections and contaminations.

 

Given such situation, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has instituted strategies on how to prevent and control the contamination of produced corn grains and grits.

DA-Cordillera represented by Leah Espita-Mon, Chemical Technician from the Regional Animal Feeds Analysis, and Alma Mae Capuyan under Corn and Cassava Banner Program, held a two-day training on Mycotoxin prevention and contamination reduction in corn grains to 22 Abreñean corn producers from the municipalities of  Bangued, Pidigan, La Paz, Lagangilang, Peñarrubia and San Quintin.

Mycotoxin is an insidious poisonous toxic produced by fungi growing in crop and it is disastrous to the health of humans and animals.

The training helped the participants to fully understand the set of standards of the Code of Practice for the prevention of Mycotoxin contamination in cereals. It also improved their knowledge on the Code of Hygienic Practice in the processing and handling of corn grits.

The participants were also instructed with the Good Agricultural Practices that they need to observe at a primary production in order to ensure safe and wholesome product yet minimizing the negative impact on the environment and on the health of workers.

Eradication of contamination may be impossible but preventing it from contamination will contribute to the welfare to the overall health status of the nation. (PIA Abra)
