4th Bantayog-Wika unveiled in Kalinga

CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga, June 27 (PIA) --The country’s fourth Bantayog-Wika was unveiled at the Kalinga State University (KSU) campus in recognition of the Ikalinga language last Monday.

Virgilio Almario, National Artist for Literature and Chair of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCAA), led the unveiling ceremony.

Through the Bantayog-Wika, ethnic communities today are guided and reminded of the love of culture that they ought to hand down to the young as part of the Filipino ‘intangible heritage’, Almario said.

“Unless we preserve our ‘native tongue’, our life and identity as cultural communities would little by little vanish away because of modern influence,” he warned.

Spearheaded by the Office of Senator Loren Legarda in partnership with NCCA and various state universities, the project aims to erect shrines to showcase indigenous culture and practices through the preservation of native language.

The first Bantayog-Wika was put-up in Antique for the Kinaray-‘a; the second in Lamut, Ifugao for Tuwali and the third in Mati, Davao for Manday’a.

Almario said they are going around the country’s 131 indigenous communities to erect Bantayog-Wika.

KSU President Eduardo T. Bagtang considered it as distinct honor and privilege to host the Ikalinga Bantayog-Wika. He vowed to develop the site and make it as one of the province’s tourist spots. (PIA Kalinga)
