Cacao takes center stage in 2018 Tabuk Patawid fair

CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga, June 22  (PIA) -- Cacao choco is this year’s promo-product in the annual Patawid Trade Fair of the city’s 17th Matagoan Festival and 11th Founding Anniversary from June 16 to 23.

 

Organizers of the Patawid led by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial office selects a new local product for promotion every year.

Jeffrey Pasikan of DTI-Kalinga informed cacao industry is one of the recent ventures of farmers in Tabuk, who had developed a 13-hectare cacao farm situated in various sites.

Started about five years, there are 35 growers who are now into cacao processing. Cacao seedlings start to bear fruit after three years while grafted tress could bear fruit in two years.

Alice Walley, owner of about 6,000 cacao trees in Barangay Tanioc, in this city, related that her family opened the farm in 2005 and is now seeing a good business opportunity out of it.

Through government programs, they acquired processing skills in the production of cacao tablea, cacao cookies, choco-balls and chocolate drink.

Following health-science, she vouched that her family applies organic farming on their cacao farm that yields them year-round reap.
