Kalinga-PENRO appeals for protection of reforestation sites

CITY OF  TABUK, Kalinga, June 18 (PIA) -  - Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Noel Barientos called on residents living near the National Greening Program (NGP) sites in the province  to help protect the government’s reforestation project.

 

PENRO reports showed that about 300 hectares of NGP area in the municipalities of Rizal, Pinukpuk and this city were burned by grassfires last summer.

Investigation revealed that simple carelessness of some people throwing cigarette butts is one of the causes of grassfire.  Another is the incessant practice of kaingin that is expanding into NGP areas and grazing lands to grow fresh grass to feed the cattle.

The NGP that started in 2011 covered a reforestation area of about 19,000 hectares.

Under the project, partner people’s organizations are given a three-year contract to establish and maintain the reforestation site and are provided subsidy of P3, 000 per hectare in the first year and P2, 000/hectare for the second and third years.

Because of massive losses from grassfires, Barientos appealed to the public to be involved in the greening effort of the government by keeping close watch against forest fires. Larry T. Lopez (JDP/LL-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
