Kalinga to host regional S & T Week celebration

CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga, Sept. 7 (PIA) -- This province will host the 2017 Regional Science and Technology (S&T) “Science for the People” Week from October 10 to 14.


Jointly sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Technology Application and Promotion Institute, and the Provincial Government of Kalinga, this regional gathering will feature S & T and Interactive exhibits, Techno Bazaar, and technology fora.

Technology gatherings include the conduct of a Science and Technology for the Advancement of Municipalities (STEAM) forum on 21st Century Leadership for Local Chief Executives and Municipal S & T Coordinators in the Cordillera Region; the annual summit for Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program clients to include awarding of best adaptors; forum on brown rice technology, iron fortified rice, emergency foods, and certified food products; forum on safe use of food additives and food safety; forum on chocolate processing, coffee and cacao organic production and post-harvest technologies.

There will also be information, education, communication campaigns on Deployment of Early Warning System with drill at an identified flood-prone barangay here and the Community-Based Flood Early Warning System for this city; S & T Quiz for elementary and secondary schools in CAR and launching of the Cordillera Disaster Risk Reduction Management Information System. PAGASA will also bring a mobile planetarium for students.

Provincial DOST head Jasmine Donaal advises schools to make reservations for the mobile planetarium which is expected to be a crowd drawer.

DOST Sec. Fortunato dela Peña with Regional Affairs Undersecretary Brenda Nazareth-Manzano and heads of attached agencies under DOST are expected to grace the occasion.

This will be the first time that the regional S & T will be conducted outside Baguio and Benguet and will be piloting the eventual rotational holding of the celebration in all CAR provinces.

Creation of Baguio culture, arts council proposed

BAGUIO CITY  – The preservation and promotion of culture and arts in the city got an added boost following the filing of a proposed ordinance creating the Baguio City Culture and the Arts Council in support of the plan of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cordillera Regional Development Council (RDC-CAR) to establish said councils to allow access to financial and technical assistance from the Commission.


Quest for autonomy gets Senate backing

BAGUIO CITY  – The third attempt of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) for autonomy got a big boost from a member of the Senate bolstering the chances of the enactment of the proposed autonomy law once certified by President Rodrigo R. Duterte as a priority administration measure, Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito said here recently.
