Pasil town to pilot bamboo reforestation project

PASIL, Kalinga, July 13 (PIA) – This highland municipality of Kalinga is chosen as pilot area on bamboo reforestation under the Sustainable Integrated Area Development (SIAD) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

 

Magdalena Buyugan of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office reported that at least 56 hectares are targeted for the project. About 11,200 bamboo plants have been propagated and ready for planting.

As component of the project, forest protection officers are hired and a ranger station shall be provided in the area to assure sustainability and protect of the reforestation work.

Under the government’s enhanced National Greening Program (NGP), bamboo reforestation is included because of its soil-holding capacity.

In a related report, the PENRO had propagated a total of 50,637 seedlings in the first six months of the year under the NGP. Another 73 hectares are targeted for agro-forestry that promotes planting of fruit trees. (JDP/LL-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
