Milagros Caridad Guerrero Obedoza opened Marie June Bakeshop in 2000 and in its two decades of existence, it has consistently been serving quality and delicious breads, cookies and cakes.
A dentist by profession, Obedoza said that never did she thought that she would venture into business. She shared that It was when she was in private practice in Mankayan, Benguet that she learned baking as her older sister has a bakeshop in Lepanto then.
In 1995, when she returned to Tadian, Obedoza started baking cakes, cheese cupcakes, banana breads, brownies and tarts as a sideline while working as a volunteer dentist at the rural health unit.
Five years later, she decided to go full time as an entrepreneur opening her own bakeshop.
Venturing into a business has its ups and down. She was initially challenged of putting up more capital for equipment and vehicle for product delivery but through perseverance, the bakeshop continued operation and business is getting better through the years, she shared.
The bakeshop slowly increased its by products necessitating the hiring of more people. It expanded its market and in August 2014, Marie June opened an outlet at the Tadian Public Market that serves as a coffee shop and product display/selling area.
To further boost the business, Marie June Bakeshop applied and become a beneficiary of the Department of Science and Technology’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), the banner program of DOST that aims to assist micro, small and medium enterprises become productive and competitive through the provision of a holistic package of science and technology interventions.
The SETUP assistance provided to the Marie June Bakeshop include technology upgrading, MPEX (manufacturing Productivity Extension) consultancy, Current Good Manufacturing Practices training and laboratory analysis.
At present, Marie June is supplying 100 market outlets from the other towns of Mountain Province and some areas in the municipalities of Mankayan and Atok, Benguet with its bakery breads, carrots cakes, brownies, personalized cakes, cheese cakes and boo tarts.
Obedoza is grateful to her loyal and hardworking workers, the customers for their continuing thrust and patronage and the DOST for its technical assistance.
Its 20th year of existence is capped with its being recognized as the 2020 Best Provincial SETUP Implementer for Mountain Province during the DOST- led celebration of Regional Science and Technology Week last November 23 to 29. (JDP/CCD with reports from DOST Mountain Province)
