Mayor Magalong keen on acquiring robotic disinfection unit for Baguio

BAGUIO CITY, Sept. 25 (PIA) -- The city government of Baguio is keen on utilizing robotic technology   for the city’s continuing fight against the COVID-19.

“Looking at the efficacy and at the same time the ease of disinfection, we are bent on acquiring one robot to be used in the different areas in the city,” Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said.

“This virus moves fast and so should technology. We must embrace new and proven technology whenever we can to help fight COVID-19,” said Magalong, who is often lauded for his aggressive and efficient management of COVID-19 in the city.

Over the weekend, Robotic Activations, a robotics provider deployed a Danish industrial-grade autonomous UV-C disinfection robot called the Keno UV-C which thoroughly sanitized the Baguio City Hall, Baguio Teachers’ Camp, and the Community Isolation Facility at the Sto. Niño Hospital.

The robot unit also disinfected the newly opened centralized triage area at the Baguio Convention Center where tourists, returning residents, and other visitors of the city will be examined upon entry. It also disinfected the premises of the Baguio Convention Center prior to the Coordinated Operations to Defeat Epidemic (C.O.D.E.) Team Visit-Meeting last Saturday.

Robotic Activations Chief Business Development Officer Camille Anton-Mendoza said the robotics can be an important ally in fighting COVID-19.  She explained the disinfection robot optimizes the germicidal power of UV-C light with Danish technology to kill up to 99% of pathogens, including SARS-COV-2, by breaking down their DNA-structure.

“We are extending our services to the city of Baguio free of charge primarily to help the city and to demonstrate how robotics can be an important ally in fighting COVID-19,” Mendoza said.

“Our aim is to increase the use of robotics and new technology in general as we move forward and ease into the New Normal. Disinfection is only one of the many applications of robotics, and we are working on bringing in other types of robots that will prove very useful as well,” she added.

Robotic Activations is a Manila-based automation solutions company specializing in collaborative robots and autonomous mobile robots. It is a recognized Universal Robots and Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR) - Certified System Integrator that offer flexible solutions and tailored services to match the needs of different use cases and applications.

The acquisition and use of the robotics disinfection is part of Magalong’s vision of the Baguio to be a Smart City. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
