DTI gives livelihood kits to fire victims, former UGMO members

ILOCOS SUR, Sept. 15 (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through its Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa (PBG) program, provided livelihood starter kits to 18 fire victims and five former members of the underground mass organization (UGMO) in the second district of Ilocos Sur.

Each of the beneficiaries received Php 10,000.00 worth of livelihood starter kits in the form of sari-sari store, bigasan store, hog raising, goat raising, and furniture tools and equipment which were turned over to them on September 3 and 4, 2020 in the awarding ceremonies held in Candon City Hall and Tagudin Municipal Hall, respectively.
Prior to the awarding of the livelihood kits, the beneficiaries underwent an entrepreneurial seminar conducted by the DTI to equip them with knowledge on how to effectively manage their small enterprises.
The beneficiaries were selected based on the qualifications stated in the PBG program guidelines after a thorough profiling and validation conducted with the assistance of the concerned local government units.
During the awarding ceremony in Tagudin, Mayor Roque Verzosa, Jr. inspired the beneficiaries by saying, “The government is always here to help those who are in need. We have various government agencies like the DTI as an instrument in making our lives become better. We thanked the DTI for working passionately in providing support to our people.”

In that event, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Members (SPMs) Jaime Singson and Virginia Pe Benito also informed everyone that the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur will complement what the DTI has provided to the beneficiaries.
SPM Singson mentioned the Php 7-million fund approved by Governor Ryan Luis Singson to help in the recovery efforts of the micro, small and medium enterprises sector from the effects of the pandemic.
SPM Pe Benito reiterated the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur’s support to the PBG program and its close working relationship with the DTI in facilitating the growth of micro and small enterprises in the province.
She said, "If you need our assistance, please let us know. We, at the Provincial Capitol are very much willing to help you.”
Meanwhile, 2Lt Dennis Barioga of the 81st Infantry Battalion reinforced the Philippine Army’s unrelenting service of maintaining peace and order as it is one of the key elements to have a conducive business climate.
“We are always here to protect and serve you,” he said.
Coinciding with the activity was the awarding of labelling and packaging materials to 10 vinegar processors in the second district of the province.
This is a result of the Product Development Program for the Sugarcane Vinegar Industry which aims to enhance the marketability of local vinegar through the provision of enhanced labelling designs and appropriate packaging materials.
“The municipality of Tagudin is a vinegar producing municipality. Aside from the vinegar, we are also proud of our other local products such as bagoong, sili and of course calamansi, our OTOP. Out of these products of our humble town, we can also create new products just like what they did in the Visayas and Mindanao. By combining suka, calamansi and sili, we can create a new product to be called Sukali, while the mixture of suka, bagoong and sili produces Subali. All we need to do is to innovate,” said Mayor Verzosa. (JCR/AMB/PIA Ilocos Sur with reports from DTI)
