Privacy Commissioner assures individual data, protected by law

PARAÑAQUE CITY, July 23 (PIA) -- The Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA) ensures the safety of private data given to establishments for transactions as the country transition to the ‘New Normal’, said National Privacy Commission (NPC) Commissioner Raymund Enriquez Liboro.

During the Laging Handa public briefing on Thursday, Liboro said the DPA was enacted to ensure the public that the process of data collection in the Philippines will be trustworthy, and that the citizens can trust private and public sector’s digital practices to use the data collected responsibly.

He said to always be wary of online scams as these violate privacy, lead to identity theft, and may result in the loss of public trust.

Liboro, however, reminded the public, as well as, private establishments that data being collected for the purpose of contact tracing may not be utilized for other purposes besides contact tracing.

The privacy commissioner added that the DPA not only seeks to protect all forms of information, be it private, personal, or sensitive, but it is meant to cover both natural and juridical persons involved in the processing of personal information.

(PIA-NCR)
