Engr. Michael Padayao, MDRRM officer of Tagudin, said the search aims to equip the barangays with knowledge and skills in handling the event of an emergency.
“We want them to become more active in DRRM activities in their barangays,” he told the Philippine Information Agency.
“Now on its second year, the search also seeks to intensify the awareness and capacitate the community through execution in four thematic areas of disaster management: disaster prevention and mitigation, disaster preparedness, disaster response, and disaster rehabilitation and recovery,” he added.
Winning barangays received disaster equipment worth P40,000 (first place), P30,000 (second place), P20,000 (third place) and P10,000 (fourth place).
Winners are: 1st place - Brgy. Pudoc West; 2nd place - Brgy. Quirino; 3rd place - Brgy. Rizal; and 4th place - Brgy. Garitan.
“This will be a yearly activity to educate and empower local communities to be more adaptive and resilient to the devastating effects of climate change,” Padayao said.
Aside from the search, responders in Tagudin also participates in the annual Rescuelympics in an effort to strengthen their response capabilities.
Last year, the MDRRMO also staged a Disaster Expo in July as part of the National Disaster Resilience Month that showcased various survival technology, gear and preparation equipment, and tools and accessories that can be used during disaster.
The expo has also been a learning venue for families and communities where they learn about the importance of survival and disaster preparedness skills. (JCR/AMB/PIA Ilocos Sur)By April M. Bravo
