A strong earthquake registering 6.5 in magnitude with epicenter in Tulunan, North Cotabato aggravated the condominium building which was damaged in the earlier October 29 earthquake.
During the October 29 quake, the City Engineer’s Office condemned the building which was built in 2008.
Davao City Police Office pegged the injuries at nine people, with eight treated onsite and one taken to the hospital. No deaths were reported.
According to Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte, responders from Central 911 found no trapped occupants in their search from the rooftop to the third floor. They are currently looking for trapped people at the second floor which is wedged between the collapsed ground floor.
“The Philippine Coast Guard are helping together with their cadaver dogs if there are humans inside,” Mayor Duterte said.
Ecoland 4000 is the first condominium development in Davao City. Currently Davao City hosts numerous condominium buildings and many more are being constructed.
During a press conference at the command center in the site, the City Mayor has asked the city council to enforce height limitations on buildings in certain zones in Davao City.
“We have a pending ordinance with the Sangguniang Panglungsod requiring the limitation of building height in certain areas depending on the zoning ordinance, it is ongoing, we really need that ordinance for disaster risk and urban planning,” Mayor Duterte said. (PIA/RG Alama)
