PIA Cordillera SCOFAD is a retired teacher

BAGUIO CITY, Oct. (PIA) -- Every year in October, senior citizens are given a day to run the affairs of the local government unit and national government agencies in celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week.

A retired teacher of Mabini Elementary School served as the Senior Citizen Officer of the Day (SCOFAD) of the Philippine Information Agency-Cordillera (PIA-CAR) vice Director Helen R. Tibaldo.

“I am very much humbled to be the SCOFAD regional director in this prestigious office;  blessed with this opportunity God is glorified in whatever capacity I am able to share you, ” said Mrs. Evangeline Helen Nemedez, who served  for  30 years  in the teaching profession.

Nemedez saw not only PIA operations but   also another Presidential Communications Operations Office bureau, the Peoples Television Network (PTV) Cordillera.

She was emotional when she met at PTV three of her former pupils and also the anchor persons. She was amazed at what a studio looks like, how the personnel write their news stories and broadcast it live.

It was also a coincidence that there was an ongoing journalism workshop happening at the PFVR gym. There she was reunited with now US-based  illustrator Jogin Tamayo, a long time lecturer in her school during school press conferences. Mrs. Menesis served as adviser of the school newspaper.

All things are happening today, meeting people and acquaintances, it reminds me of my teaching days, she said.

Nemedez final exposure was her appearance in the long time running program, PIA-run Hours with CARE Kapihan sa Baguio where she expressed her gratitude for her” wonderful and humbling experience she will never forget.”

By virtue of City Ordinance No. 57, s. 2009, every first Monday of October is known as the “Senior Citizens Officials of the Day (SCOFAD) in the City of Baguio.” Selected senior citizens are assigned in the offices of all elective and appointive officials and regional line agencies in Baguio for a day to intensify advocacy in promoting older persons rights and welfare.

This is also a way of encouraging senior citizens that age is not a hindrance of being productive members of the community.

This year’s Elderly Filipino Week theme was “Healthy and Productive Aging Starts With Me."(JDP/JBZ-PIA CAR)
