Jointly implemented by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Department of Agriculture (DA) and the local government unit, the activity was intended to enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants on the basics of animal production with emphasis on scientific and sustainable management so that they may be able to raise free range chicken that is becoming popular as it has more meat and eggs that are safe and healthy.
Jener Dizon of ATI-CAR said that national livestock, dairy and poultry program is part of the 10 basic foundations of a sound agriculture and fisheries program under the Duterte Administration. Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol pronounced that the DA should go back to its basic mandate of producing food for the Filipinos such as free range chicken production.
Dr. Annalie Paragas of the Tarlac Agricultural University lectured on the promotion of technologies on free range chicken for meat and egg production. He told the participants that before starting with this project they must have a basic scientific knowledge of this industry.
These include housing and supplies, breeds and their characteristics, brooding, growing and lighting management, laying management, feeds and feeding, alternative feeds, care of eggs and incubation, vaccinations, alternative health management, common diseases, treatment and control and recording.
She explained that it is called free range or free roaming because it enables the chickens to do things natural in their environment such as scratching out of their houses and get natural food and its characteristics involve easy technology, use of organic or natural farming system, little effort exerted, can be done by women and their children, it has good benefit to the soil, the chickens can feed on grasses and leaves or leftovers from the kitchen or farms.
