LGU – Banaue joins ASEAN celebration

BANAUE, Ifugao, Aug. 14 (PIA) - - Employees and officials of the local government unit (LGU) here joined in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) simultaneous lantern lighting in celebration of the  50th anniversary  of the 10-member state regional organization last August 8.

 

The municipal government of Banaue was  one of the 76 LGUs nationwide who confirmed to participate in the this historical event. President Rodrigo Duterte lighted the giant lantern at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Pasay City.

Before the lighting of the ASEAN lantern at exactly 7:00 pm, a short program was held at the municipal gymnasium fully participated by LGU family and the community featuring their unique cultural practices.

Juliet Saley of the Philippine Information Agency – Cordillera also provided a briefing about the ASEAN.

Mayor Jerry Dalipog said that it is a great honor to be part of the simultaneous ASEAN lantern lighting. “We are privileged to showcase our municipality, out talent, creativity, culture and tourism industry to the ASEAN,” he said.

Established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand with five founding members,, ASEAN is  now composed of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.  The Philippines is hosting this year’s ASEAN Summits with the theme “ Partnering for Change, Engaging the World”.  Marcelo B.
