First sanitary landfill in Ifugao opens

ALFONSO LISTA, Ifugao, Aug. 10 (PIA) - -  The local government unit of this  corn-producing municipality  will  no longer  worry  where to dump garbage collected from  households  here with the opening of its  Solid Waste Disposal Facility Category 1 or the Engineered Sanitary Landfill,  the first in the province.

The 1,000- square meter facility located in a four-hectare area government lot at Sitio Bang-ayan, Barangay Sta. Maria was formally launched on August 4 in a simple ceremony attended by employees and officials and other guests from other towns of the province.

Mayor Glenn Prudenciano said that this project is in compliance to Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act providing for an ecological solid waste management program.

“We followed the guidelines required in the law that started from waste segregation. The LGU collects the residual waste and the barangays for the recyclable and compostable waste,” Prudenciano said.

Meanwhile, Governor Pedro Mayam-o assured the support of the provincial government to the project that will help promote healthy environment and community that will lead to faster economic development.

Other municipalities like Kiangan, Lagawe and Lamut are also constructing their respective sanitary landfills. Marcelo B. Lihgawon (JDP/MBL- PIA CAR, Ifugao)
