AGUINALDO, Ifugao, June 16 (PIA)- - Teachers, school officials and students of the different public schools of this town were oriented about the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Chairmanship of the Philippines for ASEAN 2017 during a 4-day stint around the communities here.
Partnering with the Department of Education (DEPED) through Aguinaldo Public School District Supervisor Vicente Buyuccan Jr. to engage the municipality for their actual head count activity of all the pupils and students in the area, a staff from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) took advantage of the opportunity and tagged along for the conduct of information, education and communication (IEC) campaign on the ASEAN.
PIA shared to the teachers, school officials and students about the services of the office and that the reason for this endeavor is that the Presidential Communication Operations Office (PCOO) which is the mother unit of PIA is the lead committee on media affairs and communications in spreading awareness and educating the public on the ASEAN and the country’s chairmanship of ASEAN 2017.
This is to ensure that in this year’s ASEAN Chairmanship, more Filipinos and Asian citizens will gain better understanding of the ASEAN’s role in the region’s improvement of its citizens’ quality of life, strengthening cultural awareness and maximizing of the individual’s potential.
PIA explained to the participants about the history of the ASEAN, the member states, its organization and aims which are to accelerate economic growth social progress, socio-cultural evolution among its members, protection of regional peace and stability and the opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully.
They were also informed about the three pillars of the ASEAN Community which are the Political-Security Community led by the Department of Foreign Affairs to ensure that there will be peace, fairness and harmony among the members, the ASEAN Economic Community headed by the Department of Trade and Industry which envisions to unite the ASEAN Region with the free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labor and free flow of capital and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development that also aims to build a caring and sharing community.
The audience were able to learn during the IEC that the theme for this years’ Philippine Chairmanship of the ASEAN is “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World” that aims to highlight ASEAN as a model of regionalism and global player with the people at its core which reflects the Philippine Government’s advocacy to promote unity with and among ASEAN member states and its global partners.
It was also explained to the students, teachers and school officials that the Philippines will focus on six thematic priorities which encompass the political, economic and socio-cultural aspects that include a people-oriented and people-centered ASEAN, peace and stability in the region, maritime security and cooperation, inclusive, innovation-led growth, ASEAN’s resiliency and ASEAN as a model of regionalism and a global player.
