Kiangan involves males in efforts against VAWC

KIANGAN, Ifugao (PIA)- - A composite team from national and local agencies    conducted a month- long barangay-based IEC to 550 male care givers of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries regarding Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) Law.

Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office(MSWDO) Head Mario Indopia said  the IEC on RA 9262 and other child protection laws was conducted the whole month of March 2017 to the 14 barangays of the town in response to the increasing number of domestic violence . Many of these cases were hidden for a long time in the homes of the affected families which cannot be ignored anymore.

He said that the law has brought to the fore the need for a deepening involvement of the citizenry in addressing domestic violence and upholding the rights of women and their children and that the VAWC Law has given recognition on the roles of barangay officials in promoting human rights and ensuring child-friendly communities.

Indopia informed that there are currently 768 4Ps beneficiaries in the 14 barangays of the municipality. But he noted that Family Development Sessions (FDS) were attended only women so they felt the need to involve the male care givers.

The 4Ps male care givers were oriented that violence against women and their children include acts of physical violence, sexual abuse, psychological abuse and economic abuse and that the VAWC Law refers to any act or a series of acts committed by any person against a woman who is his wife, former wife or against a woman with whom the person has or had sexual or dating relationship or with whom he has a common child or against her child whether legitimate or not inside or outside the their home which resulted or likely to result to the above mentioned abuses.

It was also explained that women can also be liable under this law which include the lesbian partners, girlfriends or former partners of the victim with she has or had sexual or dating relationship.

Other topics discussed under RA 9262 are the Barangay Protection Order, its rules and procedures, duties of the barangay officials and enforcers and the rights of the victims.

The activity was made possible by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, MSWDO, Philippine National Police and the Rural Health Unit of this town. By: Daniel B. Codamon (JDP/DBC- PIA CAR, Ifugao)
