NSED tests hospital’s preparedness and response plans

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Aug. 17 (PIA) - - In line with the government’s goal of instilling a culture of preparedness especially to the vulnerable sector, the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CRDRRMC) staged the 2018 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill at the Benguet General Hospital here on August 16.

As the earthquake alarm hit at 2pm, BeGH emergency Incident Command System (ICS) headed by Chief of Hospital Dr. Maria Imelda Ulep, put their emergency response plan into action with validation team from the CRDRRMC and private volunteer partners observing.

Aside from the hospital’s safety and evacuation protocol for an earthquake incident, the NSED drill also included a fire incident scenario that also tested BeGH response protocol for such emergency.

Dr. Ulep welcomed the opportunity to be chosen as the pilot area for the NSED, as it is a good venue to practice their emergency response plans. She assured that suggestions and even criticisms will be taken positively to further improve the hospital’s preparedness and response plans .

CRDRRMC Chair and Office of Civil Defense Cordillera Regional Director Ruben Carandang outlined the importance of regularly testing emergency response plans through conduct of drills to see the effectivity and know if there is a need for improvement towards the overall goal of minimizing casualties in times of actual disasters or calamities.

Carandang, in a media interview, also reminded the public that for any emergency preparedness or response plan, their   full support and cooperation is equally important to ensure the safety of the people, especially those in high risk communities.

‘The threat of tropical cyclones and monsoon rains remains. As the government continues to work in improving disaster risk reduction and management in the country, we also call for the people’s support in ensuring their safety and of their families,’ Carandang added. (PIA CAR)
