Hydro power plant up for construction in Benguet town

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Dec 19 (PIA) -- A 19 megawatt hydro power plant using the run-of-river hydropower technology will soon be constructed in barangay Bineng, here.

Officials of Benguet, La Trinidad and the host barangays of Alno, Alapang and Bineng with the high ranking officials of Hedcor and Aboitiz Power led the ground breaking ceremony for the 19MW Bineng Combination Hydro Power Plant last week.

Aboitiz Power Executive Director Chris Sangster said that the Bineng Combination Hydro is a product of Hedcor’s tireless exploration of innovative ways to maximize clean and renewable energy sources. This is expected to increase the current capacity of Bineng 1, Bineng 2 and Bineng 2B from 5.48 MW to 19MW.

“We are glad to have the support of the local government units, the indigenous peoples and the community as a whole. Hedcor has been in the community for 26 years and with the Bineng Combination project, the existing shares, taxes and Corporate Social Responsibility projects to the barangay, municipal and the province will also increase,” he added.

Hedcor Senior Vice President Chris Faelnar said that the Bineng Combination Hydro Power is expected to generate 62-million kilowatt-hours annually. The project is estimated to be completed by June 2019 with a total investment of P1.7 billion.

Faelnar said that aside from the additional power generated from the new hydro plant, the project would also signify the increase of benefits that will go to the communities.

La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda welcomed the project that would assure benefits to the consumers and the host communities. He also thanked the people in the host barangays and the Hedcor for their patience in dealing with the long process before the project was approved.

“We are positive that this development will have great impact on the municipality’s growth. In addition to being a reliable power supplier, Hedcor and AboitizPower are strong partners in the socio-economic development of the community,” Salda said.

Earlier this year, the host barangays Bineng, Alno and Alapang and the Municipality of La Trinidad approved the project though the memorandum of agreement with the Hedcor. Redjie Melvic Cawis (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
