BAGUIO CITY, July 13(PIA) - - The Department of Agriculture brought the Halal Food Industry promotions to Cordillera stakeholders with the conduct of an orientation and workshop on Republic Act 10817 or the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotions Act of 2016 in the city last week.
Sahraman Disomimba of the DA Halal Program Management Office presented DA’s Halal Food Industry Development Program (HFIDP) which aims to develop a globally competitive and sustainable Philippine Agri – fishery sector by increasing production and market access of Halal agri – fishery products.
Halal is an Arabic term that refers to lawful or permissible under Sharia’h (Islamic Law). He explained that Halal as an industry aims to promote healthy living, organic, food safety, clean and sanitized facilities and equipment, environment – friendly, animal welfare, fair trade and promotion of justice, among others.
Halal industry products, include food and non – food, and the industry also include Halal Tourism, as well as banking and finance, he added.
Disomimba said the Halal Food Industry Development is now among the banner programs of DA wherein through the department’s HFIDP, aside from the domestic market, the country hoped to produce products for exportation.
Halal industry is very promising. It is the only stable economy in the world and if we can export products or access the global Halal market, it will bring economic gains to the country, he stressed.
In the Global Islamic economy, for Halal food alone trade volume in 2015 is worth $1.17 trillion and is projected to rise up to $1.91 Trillion by 2021.
For the DA – HFIDP, it has eight program components namely establish a DA – Halal related policies, develop Halal standards and enabling regulations, increase Halal agri – fishery production, establish or update Halal infrastructure, conduct capability building activities and develop IEC materials and quad – media promotions, establish linkage and networking, market and promotion of Halal food products, and conduct Halal research and development.
At present, DA is promoting HFIDP to DA agri - fishery personnel and focal persons/partners in the provinces. Aside from Cordillera, other priority and strategic area for the program are Regions 4 – A, 7, 12, Calabarzon and ARMM, Disomimba said.
After promotions, next will be identification of possible Halal Farms, facilities and other services, as well as training and capacity building, he added. (PIA CAR)
