BAGUIO CITY, Feb. 2 (PIA) -- Medical officers prompt the public to adopt or maintain healthy lifestyle to help prevent cancer.
Cancer remains to be the third leading cause of mortality (death) worldwide, this is reason for the continuing promotion of cancer consciousness.
Dr. Karen Tadeo of Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center explained in a kapihan forum that though some cancer cases are hereditary, others are lifestyle related.
Cancer can be genetic or in the bloodline which is why early detection is important for those who have family history of cancer, she stressed.
Other than hereditary, risk factors of cancer are lifestyle – related such as smoking, excessive intake of alcohol, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and obesity, among others.
Studies indicate that some cancer cases could be potentially prevented through healthy lifestyle pattern that includes healthy and balance diet, physical activity, no cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking, and maintaining healthy weight as well as positive health attitudes.
Tadeo shared that at the BGHMC in 2017, the leading types of cancer cases for female were breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer with 390, 201, and 60 patients, respectively.
For men, the leading cancer cases were rectum, colon, and gastric cancer with 99, 66, and 50 cases, respectively.
Tadeo said that the BGHMC has a Cancer Treatment Center that offers Brachytherapy, an advanced cancer treatment. There are also chemo therapy units already installed in the facility. Carlito C. Dar (JDP/CCD/J. Tarectecan & A. Fernandez-PIA CAR/UC Interns)
