BAGUIO CITY, Feb. 2 (PIA) -- Violence against women (VAW) is threat to human security so women should know their rights and be empowered.
Department of Justice Assistant Secretary Cheryl D. Yangot said VAW is considered as one of the country’s pervasive social problems and that it persists despite the presence of related laws, policies, and programs.
“We should empower our women, to be active in the society and partners of development and nation building, and more importantly, women should know their rights,” Yangot stressed during the Regional Committee Against Trafficking, Child Pornography and Violence Against Women and their Children Program Review and Strategic planning.
Data of the Cordillera region for 2015-2016 listed a total of 357 VAW cases of which 244 involved physical abuse, 17 sexual abuses, and 19 psychological and economic abuses.
P/CInsp. Divina Mencio, chief of Women and Child Protection Division of Police Regional Office Cordillera, said VAW encompasses verbal abuse, intimidation, physical harassment, homicide, sexual assault, and rape. These forms of violence occur precisely because of their gender.
She reported a growing awareness of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence against Women and their Children and other related law as indicated by increase of cases being reported to authorities.
“Our police personnel are well trained to handle sensitive cases of VAW. Our women are now educated on their civil liberties that is why we have an increase in the number of reported cases,’ Mencio said.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development Cordillera spearheaded the event with the RCAT-CP-VAWC member agencies; the Philippine National Police, Dept. of Labor and Employment, Commission in Human Rights, Civil Service Commission, Department of Health, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, DOJ, Commission on Population, Dept. of Interior and Local Government, Bureau of Immigration and Deportation, Dept. of Immigration, Philippine Information Agency, and Igorota Foundation.
