BAGUIO CITY, Oct. 6 (PIA) -- The Philippine Statistics Authority and the National Economic Development Authority highlighted the importance of statistics towards stable, comfortable and peaceful life for Filipinos during the launching of the 28th National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration in the Cordillera.
At the kapihan media forum that followed an early morning Zumba at the PIA-CAR grounds here Wednesday, PSA–Cordillera Statistical Operations and coordination Division chief Aldrin Federico Bahit Jr., explained that this year’s NSM celebration aims to further strengthen and gain support on the use of statistics for an accurate evidence-based decision making towards the attainment of the goals of “Ambisyon Natin 2040”.
The 28th NSM adopts the theme, “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions Towards Ambisyon Natin 2040”.
Ambisyon Natin is the long-term Philippine Development Plan where all Filipinos are envisioned to enjoy a “Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na buhay” (stable, comfortable and peaceful life).
Dr. Carmel Matabang of NEDA–CAR elaborated that Ambisyon Natin 2040 is the result of a nationwide survey conducted to 10,000 respondents (15 to 50 years old) representing different income class and both in urban and rural areas from Sulu to Aparri. Through face-to-face interview, they were asked what they want for themselves in 2040.
About 79 percent answered that they want a simple and comfortable life generally described as having a medium-sized home, having enough earnings to support everyday needs, owning at least one car/vehicle, having the capacity to provide their children college education, and going on local trips for vacation.
In moving towards the long-term development, NEDA crafted “Aksyon Para Sa Ambisyon” program that is guided by the Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022 that lays ‘stronger foundation for more inclusive growth, a high-trust and resilient society, and a globally competitive knowledge economy’.
It is supported by the Regional Development Plan that contains goals on social and human development, sustainable economic growth, environmental quality and sustainable use of resources, regional integration and cultural integrity and identity, and regional autonomy which is a unique goal for the Cordillera region.
Representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Education, Department of Environment and Natural Resources ENR and the Police Regional Office Cordillera also presented important statistics from their respective agencies that are related to the attainment of the socio-economic goals of Ambisyon.
Bahit informed that there is also the Cordillera Regional Statistical Development Plan 2017-2022 that will serve as guide for the different regional line agencies in the production and dissemination of reliable statistics that are needed to craft the appropriate programs and policies.
Around 100 employees from various regional line agencies participated in the Zumba that kicked of NSM celebration.
National Statistics Month is being observed every October by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 647 issued on 20 September 1990 and generally aims to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance of statistics to the different sectors of society.
