BAGUIO CITY, June 14 (PIA) -- World class athletes who have been representing the Cordillera region and the Philippines in the international combative sports and mix martial arts events got a boost from fellow Cordillerans.
Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao and ONE Lightweight Champion Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang and the rest of the team last week received the cheque donation of P567, 718.50 from Suntrust Properties Inc. President Harrison Paltongan.
Paltongan, a native of Mountain Province, said that his firm took the lead in staging a golf tournament to support the Team Lakay, composed of Cordilleran-world class combative sports and mix martial arts athletes.
“I had personally seen how they had grown from mere local legends to famous faces in the international MMA scene. I hope this amount will help them improve their training facility, and become and inspiration and model to the younger generations of Cordillerans,” said Paltongan.
Paltongan said that aside from the support to the Team Lakay, he believes encouraging the youth to engage in various sports discipline including mixed martial arts would lead them away from drugs, smoking, drinking, and other vices which are getting more prevalent in the highlands.
He added this is also part of their corporate social responsibility, and is a way to encourage other Cordilleran companies and individuals to support their “kababayans” or fellow Cordillerans.
“Nakakatuwa at nakakataba ng puso at tayo mismong taga-Cordillera ang nagtutulungan,” Folayang said during the turn-over ceremony.
Folayang assured the donors that the money will be put to good use especially to help other younger athletes in the region to also excel in their respective sports particularly on the combative sports.
Sangiao bared this is the biggest support, financially and morally for the Team Lakay athletes. He assured that the money will be put to good use particularly for the upgrading of facilities and equipment in the different gyms being used by the athletes. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
