BAGUIO CITY, June 5 (PIA) - - Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) is a major force in the Association of South East Asian Nations(ASEAN) Economic Community thus the need for change in mindset among Filipino entrepreneurs to be competitive in the global market.
MSMEs must gear up and change their ways. They must work to increase their efficiency, reduce operation cost, improve marketing strategy, keep abreast with consumer demand and source information to be at apr with their ASEAN counterparts, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) OIC Assistant Regional Director Grace Baluyan advised during the kapihan on ASEAN here last week.
This is very critical for our MSMEs because if you want to be integrated, you must be competitive, so you got services. How to avail of services that are competent as well as not too expensive on the part of MSME, not only for the Philippines but also in the ASEAN. That’s the goal that we want to do, Baluyan said.
DTI has various MSME development initiatives that include the Shared Service Facilities (SSF) projects, Negosyo Centers, SME Roving Academy; the Philippine Business Registry, and the Go Negosyo Kapatid and Mentor Me, among others.
DTI is also instrumental in the enactment of Republic Act 6977 or the Magna Carta for MSMEs which major provisions include the creation of MSME Development Councils, RA 9178 or the Barangay Micro Business Enterprises (BMBE) Act and RA 10644 or the Go Negosyo Act that promotes “ease of doing business’ and facilitate access to services for MSMEs through the Negosyo Centers, she added.
On the MSMEs opportunities in the ASEAN Economic Community, Baluyan outlined ASEAN is the 7th largest economy in the world with a combined Gross Domestic Product of 2.6 trillion US dollar (in 2014) and the 3rd largest market with a total population of over 622 million.
For the ASEAN summits in the country, Baluyan said DTI officials are actively participating in all the discussions to make sure that the Philippines’ interest are protected as well as to ensure that the goals of ASEAN and the AEC are met. (HDP/CCD/M. Jimenez & J. DAR-PIA CAR/UC Interns)
