BANGUED, Abra, July 20(PIA) -- The Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in the province are encouraged to promote backyard gardening in their areas which focuses on food production at home through own gardens of families.
Dr. Alex Bayubay, officer-in-charge of the Department of Health (DOH) Abra Field Unit, explained during the BNS Congress this year’s Nutrition Month theme of “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon, Aanihin”. This, he said, aims to improve the healthy food consumption of Filipinos, food security and self-sufficiency through backyard gardening. He stressed that having food gardens can help improve the family as well as the community's food security.
Around 300 BNS attended the Congress conducted by the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) of Abra and the National Nutrition Council (NNC)-Cordillera as part of the Nutrition Month celebration.
The BNS Congress aimed to update the scholars with the latest information on the nutritional status of Abra and their responsibilities in implementing health and nutrition services at the local communities.
The event was also highlighted by “Nutrition at a Glance” report by Provincial Nutritionist Mary June Algarne. She confirmed that although Abra still tops the malnutrition rate of Cordillera, there is a continuous decrease in the malnutrition rate of the province from 2015 to 2017.
Algarne reminded the BNS to regularly conduct the “Operation Timbang” (OPT) with efficient, accurate and timely submission of the results which the Provincial Health Office uses as basis in executing nutrition actions in the province.
PNC-Abra also distributed vegetable seeds to selected municipalities with high malnutrition rate to promote backyard gardening to address malnutrition. (PIA Abra)
