BANGUED, Abra, May 21 (PIA) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Cordillera Administrative Region (BFAR-CAR) inaugurated on Thursday the new Provincial Fishery Office (PFO) located at Brgy. Calaba here.
Fr. Samuel Baruela of the Bangued Parish officiated the holy mass and blessing of the office.
In her message, BFAR-CAR Regional Director Lilibeth L. Signey thanked the former administration for donating the lot and for the approval of the funding for the construction of the building.
Signey also expressed optimism and wished that the operation and management of the Kirmay Fishery in San Isidro be given back to BFAR now that they have resurrected the PFO. The Kirmay Fishery was devolved to the provincial government unit when the Local Government Code took effect in 1992.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Antonio Dayag thanked the BFAR for establishing the PFO in Abra, which is headed by Janet Daguio, as he recognizes the relevance and great help of the office to the province. Acknowledging that he is a fisherfolk himself having his own fishpond, he shared that he is one of the active partners of the BFAR in distributing fingerlings to the fisherfolks in the province.
During the event, Signey also awarded the Certificate of Scholarship to Rizza C. Lugatima, the only passer from Abra in the BFAR Scholarship Examination. Lugatiman will be enrolling in a fishery-related course at the Don Mariano Marcos State University in La Union.
The BFAR Scholarship Program is offered to sons and daughters of fisherfolks.
The college scholarship package includes free school fees, monthly stipend of P4,000.00, book allowance, and other allowances to sustain the scholar in her four-year course. Maria Teresa B. Beñas (JDP/MTBB – PIA CAR, Abra)
